Borussia Dortmund vs Eintracht Frankfurt: Three BVB players to watch
By Tushar Bahl
Borussia Dortmund are back in action on Friday when they take on Eintrach Frankfurt in the Bundesliga. The Black and Yellows will be hoping to return to winning ways following their goalless draw against Hannover before the international break.
Lucien Favre’s men have started their Bundesliga campaign with a win and a draw and they go into the game against Frankfurt knowing that they cannot afford another slip up this early in the campaign. Borussia Dortmund will be without Omer Toprak and Raphael Guerreiro, while Christian Pulisic remains a doubt. However, new signing Paco Alcacer is set to make his first competitive appearance for the Black and Yellows and will be hoping to hit the ground running straight away.
So let us take a look at three Borussia Dortmund players to watch in Friday’s game against Frankfurt.
Paco Alcacer
The Spaniard was signed on an initial loan deal from Barcelona to help lead Borussia Dortmund’s attack this season. And he is set make his competitive debut against Eintracht Frankfurt on Friday. Dortmund were held to a goalless draw by Hannover last time out, and fans will be hoping that Alcacer can make an instant impact.
Alcacer has all the attributes to succeed in Germany and his arrival will allow Lucien Favre to use his desired tactics to a greater effect. Frankfurt will be determined not to concede on Friday and Alcacer’s movement and his ability to play well in tight spaces will be crucial if Dortmund are to secure the three points. The 25 year old endured a difficult time at Barcelona and a goal on his Dortmund debut will go a long way in helping him restore his confidence.
Axel Witsel
Axel Witsel has made an impressive start to life at Borussia Dortmund. The Belgian international has already scored twice and has emerged as a leader in the team. Witsel has been primarily used in the defensive midfield role and has added some much needed steel and composure to Dortmund’s midfield. The 29 year old showed his defensive qualities against Hannover, as he got into all the right places and made sure that the home side was unable to hurt the Dortmund defense.
Witsel also has excellent technical ability and an eye for goal, which makes him the perfect defensive midfielder for Dortmund. He will have to be at his very best against Frankfurt on Friday. Frankfurt have plenty of firepower in their attack and will be hoping to hurt Dortmund on the break. The presence of Witsel as the third centre back in such situations will allow the two full backs to push forward without worrying counter attacks.
Marco Reus
With Christian Pulisic out injured and Marius Wolf yet to find his form, the pressure will be on Marco Reus once again to be Borussia Dortmund’s creator in chief. The Dortmund skipper endured a frustrating evening last time out as he was denied by the goalkeeper and the woodwork in his side’s goalless draw against Hannover.
But despite his troubles against Hannover, Marco Reus still has two goals and two assists in three games this season. And if he is on form against Frankfurt, expect the Black and Yellows to enjoy a comfortable victory at the Westfalenstadion.
