Borussia Dortmund pull off a miraculous comeback against Malaga

(Borussia Dortmund 3-2 Malaga/2012-13)

In the run-up to the finals of the 2012/13 Champions League final, Borussia Dortmund faced Malaga in the Quarter-Finals. The away leg had been a goalless draw and nothing more than a win or a repeat of the previous score-line would get them through as they lacked the advantage provided by away-goals. Joaquin from Malaga scored the opening goal around the half-hour mark which put a dampener on BVB’s chances. Things would go into overdrive though, as Dortmund equalized within 10 minutes after some a counter-attack from Mario Gotze was back-heeled by Reus into the box for Lewandowski to finish under pressure.

Both teams continued to create chances but Dortmund were definitely getting closer to breaking the deadlock. However, it was Malaga who drew blood for a second time at the 82nd minute after Eliseu tapped the ball after Julio Baptista passed it behind the keeper into the box.

With time running out, it looked like Jurgen Klopp’s men would be heading out of the Champions League. But Dortmund leveled again, and this time, it was from a set-piece. A long-ball was pinged into the box before Subotic passed it to Reus who finished it with a calm head. It was the 91st minute and there was little time left. And just a minute later, Felipe Santana touched home the winner to send Borussia Dortmund into the Semi-Finals.

Dortmund managed to win a game that they were destined to lose. Despite all the odds being against them, they managed to pull through and stay in the competition.
