Stephane Chapuisat helps Borussia Dortmund dump Bayern in extra time

Borussia Dortmund were in a good space in the late 90’s but the 97/98 campaign was a massive drop-off in quality. The club finished 10th in the league and was in a difficult place, having lost almost half their games (52P, 21W, 13D, 18L). However, a win against Bayern is always something special.

The first leg of the semi-final had been a goalless draw away from home and Dortmund had a real shot at using the home-field advantage. However, not having an away goal meant that only a win would take them through.

For 90 minutes, the two sides struggled to take control and the match had entered ET. In the 105th minute, Michael Zorc was introduced into the game by then-coach, Nevio Scala. Three minutes later, Zorc found Stephane Chapuisat, who broke the deadlock. Just to put things in perspective, Zorc was already 34 and in the twilight of his career.

While Zorc remains the greatest player in Borussia Dortmund’s history and holds the record for scoring the most goals for the club (159), Chapuisat is no slouch, with 122 goals, and is the seventh top scorer in the club’s history, one spot above Robert Lewandowski.

This was a moment between two club legends, against a Bundesliga rival during a difficult season in extra time. Very special, indeed.
