Heartbreak against Bayern Munich

(Borussia Dortmund 1-2 Bayern Munich/2012-13)

This one is a loss and for many modern fans, one of the most painful moments in their time as a supporter. Dortmund came incredibly close to winning the greatest club competition in the world but had to take a loss against their biggest rivals from the Bundesliga.

However, it marked an important moment in the history of the club. After more than 15 years, Borussia Dortmund were playing in the final of the UEFA Champions League. The club was on a historic run and came very close to winning the most important trophy in club football. En route to the final, Dortmund had some historic matches like the one against Malaga and their drubbing of Real Madrid at home. It was a story written in the stars and if it weren’t for an Arjen Robben goal, things could have been very different for Dortmund today.

This game is important for a completely different reason than a win or a loss. It is important because it introduced an entire generation of fans to the club. Suddenly, every casual fan wanted to know what made this team so special. On their way to the final, Dortmund won many hearts and it didn’t matter if you were on this side of the fence or the other; everybody wanted Dortmund to meet their destiny.

It wasn’t meant to be, but the fans have stuck around and are now a part of the club’s rich history forever.
