THAT Lars Ricken lob helps Borussia Dortmund win the Champions League

(Borussia Dortmund 3-1 Juventus/1996-97)

Easily, the greatest Champions League moment the club has ever had is when they went all the way in the 96/97 campaign, winning the final convincingly against Juventus with a 3-1 scoreline.

Karl-Heinz Riedle scored a quick brace in the first half and helped BVB take control of the game. Despite Del Piero scoring one in the second half to give the Italians a half chance, things just weren’t meant to be as Lars Ricken, only 16 seconds after coming on, scored a sensational long-range lob over the Juventus goalkeeper to seal the final for good.

It was an absolute gem of a goal as Andreas Moller set him clear through, well past the defence. Ricken saw that the keeper had come off his line and took a chance from distance, chipping the ball into the back of the net. The goal is perhaps as beautiful as the moment. Ricken’s goal will live on in the club’s history forever as it helped Borussia Dortmund win their first and only UEFA Champions League title to date.

Borussia Dortmund were the underdogs throughout that campaign and beating a Juventus team that featured the likes of Zinedine Zidane, Didier Deschamps, Alen Boksic and Christian Vieri, in the final was a truly remarkable achievement.
