Maxi Gomez

Maxi Gomez is another interesting target Dortmund could bring in to shore up the position of striker. A native of Uruguay, Maxi Gomez made his name with Defensor Sporting, scoring 12 goals in 13 games in the Apertura (Uruguay’s Primera Division) before making the move to Celta Vigo, where he now plies his trade. In his 9 appearances for the club, he has amassed a total of 6 goals and 4 assists, which is impressive for a 22 year old playing in one of the best leagues in the world, with a team that’s usually closer to relegation than it is to winning trophies.

The question is, besides the goal and assist related statistics, what else does Maxi Gomez possess that makes him a prime target for Dortmund in January? For this, we can start with his size. Just like Piątek, Maxi Gomez is a larger striker than either of the options we have now. This facet is one of the first things scouts have noticed regarding Gomez, with his size and strength earning him the nickname Gucci, a name that likens him to Gustavo “El Gucci” Serafini, as David Kraakman of Breaking The Lines describes.

Physicality is certainly an aspect we could use in the attack, as neither Philipp nor Alcacer provide this readily. But Gomez’s positive aspects don’t stop there, however. On top of having a larger frame, Gomez, according to Kraakman, is very good at holding up the ball. Kraakman also highlights the fact that Gomez is a very pacey customer, making him an asset during counter attacks. All these characteristics have seen Gomez called “the most complete striker originating from Uruguay since Luis Suarez.”

Given all this positivity surrounding Gomez, I find that he would be a very solid addition to BVB’s squad, and just like with Piątek, Dortmund have been linked with the player. He would offer a more physical option than either Paco Alcacer or Maximilian Philipp, giving Dortmund more tactical flexibility.
