Record breaking Borussia Dortmund taking things game by game – Lucien Favre
By Tushar Bahl
Borussia Dortmund have be enjoying their best ever start to a season but head coach Lucien Favre is not getting carried away just yet.
Second half goals from Paco Alcacer and Lukasz Pisczcek sealed a vital 2-1 win for Borussia Dortmund against a resilient Mainz side and helped them open up a seven point lead at the top of the table. The result combined with Bayern’s 3-3 draw against newly promoted side Fortuna Dusseldorf means that Dortmund now have a nine point cushion over their Bavarian rivals.
It has been a record breaking start from the Black and Yellows, who have made the longest unbeaten start to the Bundesliga season. But manager Lucien Favre is taking things game by game and believes that not just Bayern, but a number of other teams are in the Bundesliga title race this season.
"Favre said after the game against Mainz, “It was hard, but not undeserved. We dominated the game in the first half, we were better, but unfortunately we did not score. There was a lack of precision and the right movement.”“We look at the table, but we keep playing game by game. It’s not just Bayern, other teams are playing well: Gladbach, Frankfurt, Hoffenheim, Leipzig. All games are tight. We focus on the next match, which is Wednesday against Bruges. Our goal is to have fun in training and to improve, individually and as a team.”"
Borussia Dortmund currently have 30 points after 12 games and have a seven point cushion. Although Borussia Monchengladbach have a chance to reclaim second place and reduce Dortmund’s lead to four points on Sunday when they face Hannover 96.
Midfielder Thomas Delaney, who played 90 minutes on Saturday agreed with his manager and said that Der BVB are not looking at the table just yet.
"“Today, we faced a tough opponent in Mainz, next week it’s also going to be hard. That’s the mentality that we have right now: we’re our opponent, we’re not looking that much at the table, it works just fine for us.”"
While Dortmund captain Marco Reus, who provided the assist for Paco Alcacer’s opener, praised his team’s resolve to beat a determined and disciplined Mainz side away from home.
"“It was an absolute fighting game, as we have rarely had this season. We have shown that we can win such games as well. That counts for us twice.”“Paco comes in, makes the 1: 0 two minutes later, then we get an unnecessary goal and then smashes Lukasz a ball in; a dream goal, which will hopefully become the goal of the month. The hit was worth gold for us anyway.”“Now come the English weeks again. Heavy home games are waiting for us against Bruges and Freiburg. We want to win every game”"
The games keep coming thick and fast for Lucien Favre’s men, who host Belgian side Club Brugge in the Champions League on Wednesday. Victory against Brugge will help them seal their spot in the round of 16. Dortmund’s next Bundesliga game will see them host SC Freiburg on Saturday.
