Match Review: Borussia Dortmund march on after triumph over SC Freiburg
Borussia Dortmund picked up another 3 points after beating 12th place Freiburg at the Westfalenstadion. Reus and Alcacer got on the score sheet but the game was far from a straightforward win.
The league leaders went into the game with a 4 point lead over second place Borussia Monchengladbach and 9 points over Bayern Munich. The 2-0 victory saw Lucien Favre give Dortmund their best ever unbeaten run after he overtook last season Peter Stogers side in terms of games unbeaten.
The Black and Yellows were off to a fiery start and in the first 15 minutes, they played some of their most fast and fluid football in recent time. The tempo slowed a little bit but Dortmund still controlled possession and kept Freiburg on their toes. The first chance came up when Sancho’s low cross couldn’t quite find Gotze in the 24th minute.
A well organized Freiburg side parked the bus to great affect similarly to Club Brugge in the midweek fixture in the Champions League. The first goal did eventually come for Dortmund when Jadon Sancho was fouled in the box. A decision that could have gone either way but referee Frank Willenborg decided that it was enough for a penalty. Marco Reus stepped up and sent it down the middle to give Dortmund the lead 5 minutes before the end of the first half.
There was no threat of being hit on the counter but there was still a lack of clear-cut chances created by Der BVB. And then a horrid sight for any Bundesliga team came when Mario Gotze was replaced by Paco Alacer in the 70th minute. Then in the 77th minute, Piszczek had his rocket of a shot halted by the crossbar which would have given him his second goal in two games. And possibly a goal of the month award.
Favre brought on Maximilian Phillipp to try and find the crucial goal to put the game to bed. Despite very little threat from the Freiburg attack they won back to back corners but couldn’t produce anything from it. In the closing stages of the game a brilliant goal involving Sancho, Phillipp, and Piszczek set up Paco Alcacer for his 10th league goal of the season.
Sancho once against impressed with his incredible footwork giving Freiburg’s defence nightmares. Although there wasn’t much-attacking threat from Freiburg, Dortmund are slowly improving defensively. But in the last two games The Black and Yellows to struggled to create chances and threaten in the oppositions box.
Dortmund still walked away with three points and increased their lead at the top (with three of the top 4 teams set to play tomorrow). Dortmund travel to the Veltins arena next week where they will play arch-rivals Schalke in a game where you go hard or go home.
