Revierderby Review: Jadon Sancho brings home the three points for Borussia Dortmund
League leaders Borussia Dortmund have beaten bitter rivals Schalke with a 2-1 victory at the Veltins Arena. Thomas Delaney and Jadon Sancho were the heroes as Der BVB picked up another three points in their bid to win the Bundesliga title.
The first Revierderby of the season was a good one for Borussia Dortmund as they overcame a struggling Schalke team who desperately wanted to come away with a win. Every Dortmund fan around the world knows how much a victory of Schalke means to them and this will certainly boost morale as the season wears on.
It was Thomas Delaney who gave the visitors the lead in the seventh minute after he got on the end of a Marco Reus set piece and scored the fastest goal in the derby since 1999. It was a sublime cross from Marco Reus, who played captained his first Rivierderby and to great effect. Dortmund seemed to be in control but had a scare when Guido Burgstaller’s close-range effort was brilliantly kept out by Roman Burki.
Dortmund were happy to sit back and let Schalke keep the ball and went into halftime with a 1-0 lead. Schalke started the second half on the front foot by keeping the ball and getting it forward. And then came the controversial penalty which even a die-hard Schalke fan would have agreed it could have gone either way. Marco Reus used his body to keep Amine Harit away from the ball and launch a counter.
The referee who got a good look at it saw that there was nothing to it. But play was called back and it was up to VAR to decide whether it was a penalty or not. To everyone’s surprise, the referee pointed to the spot after getting a good look at it. Caligiuri then kept the ball low to Burki’s left who went the other way.
Tensions started rising in the 63rd minute, when a foul on Diallo led to a bitter quarrel between both teams, leaving Hakimi with a yellow card for pushing a Schalke player. But after that, it was all Dortmund, who got back to being the attacking team we know them to be. A brilliant link-up between Sancho and Guerreiro saw Sancho one on one against Fährmann and the Englishman slotted it home into the bottom right corner. And that is how you achieve hero status at the club.
It was smooth sailing from there as the Black and Yellows comfortably kept their lead and the only time Schalke truly showed menace with a corner in the 92nd minute. But the corner heroics of last season were not repeated this time around.
In the end, not only was this a victory over our neighbors but it was also one step closer to glory. Jadon Sancho is proving to be a valuable player in this Dortmund side and continues to impress. This was Der BVB’s first win over Schalke in over three years and what a game it was. The Black and Yellows travel to Monaco in the Champoins League for their final group stage game of the season where they hope to regain top spot in the group.
