A controversial penalty gifts Schalke a lifeline

The 60th minute of the game saw Schalke get awarded a penalty after Marco Reus stepped on Amine Harit in the box while winning the ball from the Schalke Midfielder. The calls for a penalty were initially ignored by the referee, but VAR had it’s say and the call was reversed. Daniel Caligari stepped up and slotted home past Roman Bürki, restoring parity for the hosts.

Having watched the play several times, I still find it very hard to see how the penalty was awarded in the first place, especially considering there was no intent, on top of the fact that Reus was in front of the ball at the time of the incident. Thankfully, however, the call did not have a massive impact in the end result with Borussia Dortmund still able to pick up a much needed 3 points.
