Where are they now? How former Borussia Dortmund players have fared since leaving the club in the summer
By Tushar Bahl
Borussia Dortmund signed eight players in the summer transfer window, and to make way for the new arrivals a number of players had to be sold.
So we take a look at how those players have fared for their respective clubs since leaving Borussia Dortmund in the summer.
Sokratis – Arsenal
Sokratis was the most high profile player to leave Borussia Dortmund in the summer, joining Premier League side Arsenal for 15 million euros. And the Greek centre back has done quite well, considering how much he struggled in the last few months of his Dortmund career. The 30 year old is more suited to the physical and aggressive nature of the Premier League, than he was to the fast-paced Bundesliga. He has had a few nervy moments for Arsenal, but he has become a real leader at the back for them.
Luckily for Borussia Dortmund, they have three of the most talented centre backs in Europe, so Sokratis hasn’t been missed at all.
Andriy Yarmolenko – West Ham
Yarmolenko joined English club West Ham United after just one year at Borussia Dortmund and its fair to say that things haven’t worked out too well for him so far. He started the season on the bench, but showed his quality by getting a brace against Everton in September. The Ukraine international then got an assist in his side’s 3-1 win over Manchester United. But just as it looked like things might be on the up for Yarmolenko, he tore his achilles against Tottenham Hotspur, ruling him out for six months.
Gonzalo Castro – Stuttgart
After a disappointing spell at Borussia Dortmund, Castro joined Stuttgart for 4.5 million euros in the summer. And the former Germany international hasn’t enjoyed the best of starts with the Bundesliga strugglers. He hasn’t completed 90 minutes in the league since the opening day of the season and has only started seven of their 17 games so far. He did come off the bench to score the winner against Werder Bremen in September, but other than that, the 31 year old has endured a rough time since leaving Borussia Dortmund.
Nuri Sahin – Werder Bremen
Like Castro, Nuri Sahin has also found himself in and out of the team and has struggled to impress in the games he has played in. He has made a total of ten appearances so far this season, with his last game coming against Borussia Dortmund, where he received an lovely welcome by the supporters. Lets hope that things pick up for him in the second half of the season.
Erik Durm – Huddersfield
Erik Durm was allowed to leave Borussia Dortmund on a free transfer in the summer, and has largely remained injury free since moving to Huddersfield. He has been used both as right back and left back. Durm has found his consistency since moving to Yorkshire and has made a total of 15 appearances in all competitions so far. David Wagner’s patience in Durm has paid off so far, and even though Huddersfield are struggling at the foot of the table, its great to see Durm enjoying his football again.
Andre Schurrle – Fulham (two year loan)
Schurrle joined Premier League side Fulham on a two year loan deal after losing his place at Borussia Dortmund. And the 28 year old has already scored five goals for the Cottagers, just three less than he did during his two years at Borussia Dortmund. But despite his goals, Schurrle has largely frustrated Fulham fans with his wastefulness in possession, ineffectiveness, lack of speed and failure to track back. Like Durm’s Huddersfield, Fulham are also in the relegation zone with 11 points from 19 games.
Felix Passlack – Norwich City (loan)
Borussia Dortmund sent Passlack on a season long loan to Championship side Norwich City in the summer. And while the Canaries are involved in a battle for promotion, Passlack is enduring yet another frustrating loan spell. The full back has been limited to just four appearances in the EFL Cup and has yet to feature in the league this season. Hopefully he will get more chances to impress under former Borussia Dortmund II head coach Daniel Farke in the second half of the season.
