Best Match: vs FC Augsburg

On the seventh match day of the season, Borussia Dortmund were placing themselves on high and might ground. Their unbeaten run in all competitions at the time left an aura around each match. Would this be the day we drop points? Thankfully it wasn’t until far later in the first half of the season, did BVB lose in the Bundesliga. But their match against Augsburg was one of the games of the season.

Alfred Finnbogason opened the scoring after 22 minutes and what followed in the second half was nothing short of astonishing. Paco Alcacer came on as a substitute at half time and changed the entire complexion of the game. A clever ground pass from Jadon Sancho followed by a simple tap-in by the Spaniard tied the game at 1-1.

But in the 77th minute, poor defending by Borussia Dortmund saw Augsburg re-take the lead. Favre’s solution, the introduction of Mario Gotze. Gotze has faced numerous hills to climb over since returning to the Black and Yellows and was under massive pressure to perform in this game. Only three minutes later, Alcacer once again tied the game once again after an intelligent free kick from Raphaël Guerreiro.

At minute 84, the weight Gotze carried for so long finally left his back. After a beautiful ball from Achraf Hakimi, he finished expertly to give Borussia Dortmund their first lead of the day. It wouldn’t last long though, as an Augsburg corner led to Michael Gregoritsch beating Roman Burki from eight yards out. Tied at 3-3.

And just when it looked like the game would end in a draw, Borussia Dortmund got a free kick 25 yards away from goal. Up stepped Alcacer to score his hat trick, and the crowd went wild as Borussia Dortmund celebrated a stunning victory. The game had everything a football fan loves to see and the result proved to be a massive one for Borussia Dortmund.
