The purchase of a proper number 9: Paco Alcacer

Something that was touched upon by many fans when the season started was the fact that Borussia Dortmund started the new season much as they’d finished their last: without a proper number 9 to lead the line. Many fretted how the team would fare without a proper goal scorer, something they had become accustomed to having up until the departure of Pierre Emereick Aubameyang to Arsenal in the last winter transfer window.

Despite a good start with a 4-1 win over RB Leipzig, there was still a sense that something was missing. Enter Paco Alcacer. Alcacer was an instant hit in the first half of the season, scoring on his debut against Eintracht Frankfurt while coming off the bench, a trend that would set the course for the first half of the season. Alcacer is now joint top scorer in the league with 12 goals, and there were many inspiring performances that led him to this point, one of the most memorable being his hat-trick vs Augsburg, capped off by a sublime, game winning free kick in stoppage time.
