The rise of the young guns – Jadon Sancho and Jacob Bruun Larsen

Before the season started, everyone knew Dortmund had unearthed a gem of a player in Jadon Sancho after his transfer from Manchester City the season before. The world also knew that Dortmund has been one of the best teams across the globe at youth development for some time now. No one truly expected how perfect a setting this would be for the rise of Jadon Sancho to superstardom.

The young England international has been crucial to Dortmund’s success this season, so much so that he managed to bench Christian Pulisic who, last season, was more often than not one of the first names on the team sheet week in, week out. Sancho currently has 6 goals and 7 assists to his name, and each of these contributions has been pivotal to putting Dortmund in the position they are in now.

My most memorable Sancho moment of the season up until the midway mark has to be the goal in the Revierderby to seal the win. Not only was it special to see Sancho score in such an important game, it was beautiful to see him be able to dedicate it to his grandmother who had passed away earlier that week. It was a goal worth all the gold in the world for Sancho and the fans, and is a fantastic example of how pivotal the young English star has become to the club.

On the other wing, the left one namely, another youngster has made his mark, and his name is Jacob Bruun Larsen. The young Dane is a product of the Dortmund academy, but circumstances almost pushed Bruun Larsen to leave the club when Stuttgart offered 12 million euros for him in the summer. We all have Michael Zorc to thank for rejecting that offer, and allowing Bruun Larsen to flourish under Lucien Favre. While his performances have not compared to those that Sancho has produced, his rapid rise to the first team has shown that he has earned Lucien Favre’s trust, and while he still has work to do in terms of producing consistent performances week in, week out, we must remember he is young and in very good hands with Favre at the helm.
