Julian Weigl – Improv defender

The absence of many of Dortmund’s center backs due to injury saw Julian Weigl slot in beside Abdou Diallo in the heart of defense. While there were concerns regarding Weigl’s ability to play at the back prior to the game, the midfielder showed the Dortmund faithful and the world his versatility, slotting in almost seamlessly alongside Diallo and putting in a performance to remember.

Weigl made several crucial tackles in the game, many of which denied Leipzig clear cut opportunities on goal. In the 43rd minute, Youssef Poulsen sent a pass into the box to try and find Sabitzer, but Weigl came across to intercept and clear with precision. Weigl made a similarly fantastic interception in the 58th minute when a very well weighted pass was put into the box for Poulsen. He was able to come across and put out the fire, intercepting and clearing for his team.

Like Witsel, Weigl was crucial in breaking up Leipzig’s play in the final third, which was surely a pleasant surprise for many in the Dortmund camp. While I obviously don’t think Weigl’s future lies at the center back position, his ability to show how versatile he is may put any plans Dortmund may have of selling the midfielder to the likes of PSG. Although Michael Zorc has already firmly stated that Weigl will not be sold in the winter, I would hope this performance would prove to both Lucien Favre and the board that Weigl still has much to offer to this Dortmund side beyond this season.
