Borussia Dortmund had one of their worst second-half performances in recent memory as Tottenham put 3 past, Burki, giving them a huge advantage going into the second leg.

Borussia Dortmund traveled to London on the back of a 3-3 draw against Hoffenheim which saw them blow a 3-0 lead going into the last half an hour. In similar fashion, Tottenham also ended up scoring three goals in the second half to which Lucien Favre’s side simply could not reply too.

The first half saw both teams have their fair share of chances. Lucas Moura came agonizingly close to scoring the opener after his brilliant touch was met by a volley that just about beat Burki’s far post. Christian Pulisic had his tight angle close-ranged shot saved by Lloris but could have possibly passed it to Sancho should he have crafted the right pass.

The Englishman’s return home started off superbly as he kept making exquisite runs on the right-hand side giving the Spurs wing back an incredibly hard time. Sancho then found Zagadou who’s header was just about saved by Hugo Lloris right before the half time whistle. Both teams pretty much cancelled each other out and faced a big second half ahead.

Mauricio Pochettino would have been happy with a 1-0 result for Spurs or perhaps even a draw as Dortmund would have to go into the second leg without an away goal. Favre, on the other hand, would have ideally like a goal or two but without Reus or Alcacer that would have been difficult to achieve.

But Spurs were off to a flying start as Jan Vertoghen’s cross went over the head of Zagadou and found Son who calmly slotted it home to make it 1-0 for Tottenham. Despite taking an early, lead it was still Spurs who were most likely to score as they kept pressing without any response from Dortmund. Sancho who was causing all sorts of problems in the first half was kept at bay in the second half.

Tottenham eventually found their second after a cross from the right-hand side by Serge Aurier found Vertonghen with acres of space to double the lead. It wasn’t long till they grabbed another after substitute Fernando Llorente guided home a Christian Eriksen corner sealing the deal for Tottenham and perhaps even a quarter-final position.

A poor second-half performance from Dortmund will force them to make a miracle comeback at the Westfalenstadion in 3 weeks time. The Black and Yellows travel to Nurenburg on Monday hoping to recover from the poor results of the past 2 weeks. A bad result there and Borussia Dortmund’s season could unravel very quickly
