Hertha Berlin 2-3 Borussia Dortmund: Key Talking Points
Reus and Sancho the difference for Dortmund’s attack
Once again, the heroics for Dortmund fell to “captain clutch” Marco Reus and mercurial winger Jadon Sancho. The duo were once again at the forefront of both creating chances and scoring pivotal goals to make sure Dortmund’s title bid stays alive.
In the case of Sancho, the pacey winger started the game a little slow, misplacing passes and losing possession needlessly. Despite this, Sancho’s second half performance showed his quality once again as he dazzled the crowd with his immense talents. Sancho was responsible for assisting both goals in the second half, with the winger setting up Zagadou for his equalizing header, and passing the ball to Reus for his stoppage time goal.
Sancho also had quite a few cutting passes throughout the game, one of my favorites being the one to Marius Wolf in the 74th minute. Sancho found an onrushing Wolf with a cutting pass through the defense which led to Wolf squaring the ball across the box, creating one of Dortmund’s best chances in the game. Unfortunately, the shot was scuffed by Christian Pulisic, but the creative intent was brilliant to say the least.
As for Marco Reus, the Dortmund captain found himself coming up big for his team yet again this season by scoring the winning goal in stoppage time. Seemingly a chance that came from nothing, it was interesting, and slightly amusing to see Dortmund score from this opportunity which was far less clear cut than the other opportunities they had created throughout the game. What matters though, is that Reus found the back of the net with a beautiful shot, sealing the win for his team and, at least for 24 hours, putting them ahead of Bayern by 3 points.
