The battle for Bundesliga glory is reaching its climax. And the race for the title could be defined this Saturday when Bayern Munchen host Borussia Dortmund in the Allianz Arena in the 100th edition of Der Klassiker.

With so much at stake, both teams will be determined to get the three points and take a giant stride towards the title. In that sense, it’s necessary to take a look at the last five games (in the Bundesliga) between the two German giants. While Bayern have had the upper hand in recent years, Borussia Dortmund’s stunning win last time out will give them confidence ahead of this weekend’s clash.

November 19, 2016: Borussia Dortmund 1-0 Bayern Munich

On matchday 11 of the 2016/2017 campaign, a very different Borussia Dortmund hosted Bayern at the Signal Iduna Park, when players like Bartra, Ginter, Schurrle, Ramos and Aubameyang were all in the starting line up. It was Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang who scored the only goal of this match in the 11th minute, with Mario Gotze getting the assist with a low cross. The result allowed Borussia Dortmund to move up to third place, with Bayern second behind Leipzig.

April 8, 2017: Bayern Munich 4-1 Borussia Dortmund

The (hard) revenge of the defeat in the Signal Iduna Park came on matchday 28, when Bayern hosted Borussia Dortmund. And it was an absolutely dominant display by the Bavarian team, who took the lead after just four minutes thanks to Franck Ribéry. While Robert Lewandoski doubled their lead just six minutes later.

Raphael Guerreiro gave Borussia Dortmund a little hope by scoring a thunderbolt in the 20th minute. But Bayern restored their two goal cushion at the start of the second half when Arjen Robben scored in trademark fashion. And Lewandoski got his brace in the 68th minute from the spot. The result helped Bayern inch closer to the Bundesliga title, and the Black and Yellows finished that season in third place.

November 4, 2017: Borussia Dortmund 1-3 Bayern Munich

On matchday 11 of the 2017-18 Bundesliga season, Peter Bosz’ Borussia Dortmund hosted Bayern hoping to go level on top of the Bundesliga standings. But the game did not go as planned as Arjen Robben made it 1-0 for the visitors in the 17th minute. 20 minutes later, Robert Lewandoski doubled Bayern’s lead. In the second half, David Alaba’s cross somehow beat everyone and went into the back of the net. And right towards the end of the game, Marc Bartra scored the consolation goal for Borussia Dortmund, although it was quite easily the best goal of the lot.

March 31, 2018: Bayern Munchen 6-0 Borussia Dortmund

Following bad results in the first half of the season, Peter Bosz was fired, and replaced by Peter Stoger. However, when the Black and Yellows took on Bayern on matchday 28 of the campaign, they were handed an absolute thrashing. Robert Lewandoski scored a hattrick, while James Rodríguez, Thomas Muller and Franck Ribéry also found the net for the Bavarians. That match demonstrated just how badly the Black and Yellow needed a reconstruction to compete against their rivals.

November 10, 2018: Borussia Dortmund 3-2 Bayern Munchen

A new and improved Borussia Dortmund side hosted Bayern Munich earlier this season, hoping to open up a seven point gap between the two teams. It was a very close match, one of the most exciting and thrilling games of the season with both sides creating several quality chances. It was Bayern who scored first, thanks to a header by Robert Lewandoski in the 26th minute of the first half.

Into the second half, Borussia Dortmund started pushing further forward, got their reward just four minutes in when Marco Reus scored from the spot after being fouled by Manuel Neuer. But their joy was shortlived, because Lewandowski got his second just three minutes later to restore Bayern’s lead.

Marco Reus was the player who leveled the game again for Borussia Dortmund, this time with a stunning first touch finished after being picked out by Lukasz Piszczek’s low cross. The winner came from a great ball by Axel Witsel, who played in Paco Alcácer, and the Spaniard chipped the ball over Neuer’s head and into the net, sending the Signal Iduna Park into raptures.
