Borussia Dortmund had a night to forget in their trip to the Allianz Arena in the 100th rendition of Der Klassiker.

It was Borussia Dortmund who had the advantage going into the fixture with a two-point lead over Bayern. Niko Kovac and his men had a shaky couple of games with a 1-1 draw against Freiburg and a scare against Bundesliga 2 side Heidenheim in the DFB Pokal. Bayern Munich were definitely the better side in Der Klassiker and have hopped above Dortmund in the Bundesliga table.

The first clear cut chance of the game went to Mahmoud Dahoud. Unfortunately for Dortmund, it was their only clear cut chance of the game. Jacob Brunn Larsen sprinted down the wing and fed the ball to Reus who passed the ball back to a wide-open Dahoud who had the entire right side of the goal to aim at but he hit the post and it went out for a goal kick.

It was all downhill from there as Mats Hummels opened the scoring for Bayern. Lethal corners from Thiago were left unanswered by Dortmund and eventually, the ball met the head of the ex-Dortmund captain to break the deadlock after 10 minutes. 7 minutes later Robert Lewandowski forced an error from Zagadou leaving the striker alone with Burki who had no chance from the position he was in. It was the Polish international’s 200th Bundesliga goal.

Poor defending led to Javi Martinez taking a shot from the edge of the box to slot it home past Burki and into the bottom corner in the 41st minute. Just 2 minutes later Gnabry got the better of Akanji leading to Bayerns 4th goal. Dortmund went into half time with the game well beyond their reach.

The second half was far better from The Black and Yellows mainly due to the fact that Bayern took off most of the pressure. But Dortmund were more organized especially with the inclusion of Julian Weigl who took Zagadou’s place at the back. But it was still all Bayern and they managed to grab their fifth. Gnabry squared the ball into the box in the 89th minute for an easy tap in for Lewandowski.

It’s not over yet for Dortmund. The gap is still one point and if Favre can set a clear and concise game plan for the rest of the season the title is still well within reach. The Bavarians still have 2 very difficult fixtures in the final 2 matchdays against Leipzig and Frankfurt. If Dortmund focus on their own game and don’t get hung up on worrying about Bayerns results then we can hope to see a resurgence from The Black and Yellows.
