The Black and Yellows are still fighting for the title this season, but know that they cannot afford to drop any more points. With just five games to go, the stakes could not be higher. The business end of the season is leading to the climax of a great season. Borussia Dortmund have had a stop start second half of the season, and Freiburg will provide another tough test for them on Sunday.
Defensive frailties nearly cost Lucien Favre’s side against Mainz last weekend but Roman Burki was in top form to make sure that they picked up all three points.
SC Freiburg
WDDLL
Freiburg’s last win came well over a month ago and it may be affecting the player’s form. Christian Streich’s side are all but safe from relegation meaning they do not have much to play for from now until the end of the season. But as they did against Borussia Monchengladbach and Bayern Munich, Freiburg could steal a result on Sunday if Borussia Dortmund are not at their best.
Team News
Borussia Dortmund are still without full-backs Lukasz Piszczek and Achraf Hakimi. While Dan Axel Zagadou is also out with a knee injury. But Christian Pulisic and Raphael Guerreiro are fit once again and have traveled with the squad to Freiburg.
Opposition Star Man: Luca Waldschmidt
Injuries have hurt SC Freiburg the most this season. With key players Nils Petersen and Lucas Holer out, Luca Waldschmidt has stepped in their place. Waldschmidt joined Freiburg from Hamburger and is doing well considering how difficult the season has been for his club. Waldschmidt has 8 goals and 3 assists this term and will be hoping to breakdown a Dortmund defense that isn’t always in top form.
Last Match: Borussia Dortmund 2 – 0 SC Freiburg
Borussia Dortmund took care of Freiburg with ease during the reverse fixture at the Signal Iduna Park. Marco Reus converted a penalty after 40 minutes to give Dortmund the lead. Freiburg put up a fight, but their players were unable to score an equalizing goal. In stoppage time, a great linkup play between Sancho, Piszczek, and Alcacer saw the latter find the back of the net and seal the three points for the Black and Yellows.
