Schalke supporters show their grim side of fandom

While not directly related to the result, the traveling Schalke supporters showed a side of fandom that often obscures what it means to be an “ultra” in the eyes of the world as a whole. Shortly after Götze scored the opening goal, a lighter was flung at Jadon Sancho during the celebrations by the traveling supporters, hitting the young Englishman above the eye.

If this violent display towards the Dortmund players wasn’t enough, Schalke fans went on to reveal a banner that advocated for the release of “Sergei W”, the man responsible for bombing the Dortmund bus before their Champions League Clash against AS Monaco in April of 2017.

Marc Bartra went on to strongly condemn the actions of the Schalke supporters, and rightfully so. Having been directly injured during the bombing, he of all people had reason to have qualms with the way Schalke’s traveling supporters behaved during the game. While rivalries can run deep, advocating for the death of your direct rivals players is a step too far, and has no place in football whatsoever.
