Borussia Dortmund loanees: The final verdict on Andre Schürrle
By Alex Orillac
Situation at Fulham
On the other hand, Fulham had just gone back up from the English Championship and were looking to completely revamp their whole squad in the summer prior to them going back to the Premier League. Analyzing which position Schürrle could play, with his previous experience he could play on the left wing, as a striker which he proved to be untrustworthy, or on the right wing were he hasn’t played since his days in Wolfsburg.
At Fulham, the owner of the left wing is youngster Ryan Sessegnon who completely lit up the Championship scoring 16 goals while only being 17. Also at the striker position, they had former Newcastle striker Aleksander Mitrovic, who also played an important role scoring 12 goals in their promotion campaign. This meant that almost certainly Schürrle would be thrown into that right-hand side of the pitch.
Season at Fulham
Schürrle debuted this past season on Fulham’s season opener in a loss against Crystal Palace. Despite his lackluster performance, he started banging goals in matchday 3 and 4, replacing fan favorite Sessegnon in the latter. Schürrle’s season can be graded as lackluster, he has shown flashes of ability but overall he has been inconsistent, like much of his BVB career.
He tends to take shots he shouldn’t take and he isn’t doing what was asked for him which was to provide for Mitrovic. He has been disliked by the Fulham faithful and his disappointing performances only led Fulham to sign veteran Ryan Babel on loan in January. The Dutchman ended up taking his spot and played better than Schürrle down the stretch. Schürrle ended up with 6 goals and Fulham’s season ended with relegation.
Future at Dortmund
He is set to return to Dortmund this summer, but it would be almost impossible to see him earn any amount of playing time. On the left side of the pitch, newcomers Thorgan Hazard and Julian Brandt should be able to start right up without any sort of competition from Schürrle. While the right wing is Jadon Sancho’s home, the youngster lit up the Bundesliga this season. Now on the striker position, Dortmund have already completed the permanant transfer of Paco Alcacer, meaning we will see a lot of the Spaniard in years to come. So Schürrle is certainly surplus to requirements
Final Verdict
André Schürrle is 28 and it seems as if his prime already passed. The best we had seen of him was on his World Cup days and his last season at Wolfsburg. And he has failed to come even close to live up to the 30 million euros Borussia Dortmund shelled out on him. Dortmund should try to cash out on this horrible investment made in the Tuchel era. In my opinion, anything higher than 10 million euros would be a great deal for us.
I see him playing for a mid-table or lower team in the Bundesliga or in the Premier League. We have seen enough of Schürrle. Getting rid of his wages will be tough, but with his contract not expiring until 2021, Borussia Dortmund must find a way to get rid of him on a permanent transfer.
