Centre Backs: Willi Orban, Manuel Akanji

A whopping 3.18 goals per match were scored in the Bundesliga this season. And while that’s a result of the teams’ excellent attacking firepower, not many defenders had great seasons.

A defensive anchor for RB Leipzig, Willi Orban was arguably the best centre back in the Bundesliga this season. The Hungarian international was dominant both in the air and on the ground as he helped his side keep the best defensive record in the league. The Leipzig captain was also quite handy at the other end of the pitch, scoring four goals to help his side finish third.

Manuel Akanji partners Orban in defense after a strong campaign with Borussia Dortmund. The Swiss international played a major role in his side’s incredible hinrunde. He not only a rock defensively, but also played a part in his side’s build up play thanks to his excellent ball playing ability. He was sorely missed by Borussia Dortmund during his injury lay-off in January and February.

Other notable mentions include Ibrahima Konate and Niklas Süle.
