Most Valuable Player

Each season, the club has a top goal scorer, a best performer, and the most important player in the team. For this season, Borussia Dortmund had a single man that perfectly fits into each one of those categories. His name? Marco Reus.

Germany’s Player of the Year for 2018 had a wonderful season. Having only missed four matches due to injury, his good health was one of the main reasons Reus performed at his best level throughout the campaign. His most notable performance on the first half of the season surely came against rivals Bayern Munich. Despite trailing twice, Marco Reus made sure to put Dortmund back in the fight with two goals past Manuel Neuer. His fighting spirit and ability inspired his teammates as Dortmund went on to beat the Bavarians with a 3-2 score.

‘Der Kapitän’ was a fundamental instrument for Lucien Favre in his first season in charge. Not only did he score vital goals, but his presence on the pitch could alone determine Dortmund’s outcome. Such was the case for Bundesliga match-days 21, 23 and 32. Reus was forced to remain on the sidelines for the first two mentioned match-days and was suspended for the third. His absence on the field was clearly noticeable once you looked at the scoreboard.

Three games missed, three draws for the Black and Yellows. But what was worse than the result, was the manner in which the team played. On one occasion, it was a lack of ideas to break down the enemy’s defense and on the other, it was inexperience that led to overconfidence and ‘bottling’ matches. Marco Reus is just too important for this football club.

Despite falling short this season, Reus will be determined to lead Borussia Dortmund next year. His level of experience and know how adds a lot of value to this young squad. He will prove priceless for next season as Dortmund will seek to conquer the Bundesliga title for the first time since the 2011/2012 season. If there’s one player every fan would love to keep forever is Marco Reus. He embodies everything Borussia Dortmund stands for: Hard work, courage, passion, and above all… loyalty.
