Winners and losers from Borussia Dortmund’s early transfer business
By Tushar Bahl
Winners: Paco Alcacer and the central midfielders
Before the start of the summer, there were plans to sign a striker and a ‘Gundogan type’ central midfielder according to reports. But for now, it looks like those plans have been shelved and Borussia Dortmund have already concluded the majority of their transfer business.
That is great news for Paco Alcacer, who made a major impact following his arrival from Barcelona but struggled in the second half of the season. If a striker doesn’t arrive, Alcacer will likely share the attacking duties with Mario Gotze. And the Spaniard’s goalscoring prowess gives him the edge over Gotze, despite the latter’s better all-round play.
The arrivals of Thorgan Hazard and Julian Brandt also mean that Alcacer will get a lot of quality service from those behind him. And we all know how deadly he can be in and around the box if he gets good service. So if Alcacer can manage to stay injury free, he can definitely improve on his record of 19 goals, which he managed this season.
The plans to sign a new central midfielder have also been shelved apparently, which is good for the likes of Thomas Delaney, Julian Weigl and Mahmoud Dahoud. There were rumors that Weigl and Dahoud could be sold this summer, but now it looks like they will stay.
