Andreas Möller

Former Germany playmaker Andreas Möller is often considered to be a Borussia Dortmund great. However, he too had two spells at the Westfalenstadion, first in the late 80s and then in the 90s.

Möller first joined Borussia Dortmund from Eintracht Frankfurt in 1988 for 1.25 million euros, a club record fee then. He quickly became a key player in the team and helped them win the DFB Pokal in his first season. Möller continued his good form in the second season and helped Dortmund finish fourth in the league table.

However after helping Germany win the World Cup, Möller decided to return home in 1990 and rejoined Eintracht Frankfurt on a free transfer. The reaction from Dortmund fans was much like the reaction following Götze’s move to Bayern, starting a string of controversies surrounding the player.

After two years with Frankfurt, Möller was on the move again, joining Juventus on a free transfer.

"While looking to secure a move to Italy, Möller once famously said, “Milan or Madrid – as long as it is Italy.” His words proved to be the source of the infamous banner Borussia Dortmund fans hung up for Mario Götze following his return to Dortmund. The banner said, “Milan or Madrid, anywhere but Dortmund. Take a hike, Götze!”"

At Juventus he met Borussia Dortmund in the UEFA Cup final in 1993, which the Italian side won. Möller then decided to return to Germany in 1994 and Borussia Dortmund signed him once again, this time for 4.6 million euros. Upon returning to Dortmund, Möller was regarded as a judas but he won fans over by helping the side win two league titles as well as the Champions League in 1997.

However, the controversial midfielder then decided to move to Schalke in 2000 and helped them win the Pokal twice. Another return to Eintracht Frankfurt then followed before he retired.

Möller will always be considered one of the finest playmakers Germany has ever produced. And despite all the controversies that surrounded him, he will always be regarded as Borussia Dortmund legend.
