Leonardo Balerdi

The highly rated Leonardo Balerdi was brought in from Boca Juniors in January for 15 million euros. He wasn’t deemed ready to feature for the senior team in the second half of this season and is still awaiting his senior debut for Borussia Dortmund.

The arrival of Hummels further complicates things for the young Argentinian centre back. It remains to be seen what Borussia Dortmund’s plans are for Balerdi. And unless the BVB bosses sell two centre backs, its unlikely that he will get many opportunities next season.

Balerdi is still 20 and has a very bright future ahead of him, and can learn a lot from Mats Hummels. But at this age, he needs to be at a club where he can get regular playing time. There are two things Borussia Dortmund could do with him, either keep him and have him play for the U-23s or send him on loan to a club where he will actually be a regular.
