Borussia Dortmund youngster Dario Scuderi has made the decision to retire from football, three years after his heartbreaking injury.

Scuderi joined Borussia Dortmund all the way back in 2010, and quickly showed his immense potential, moving through the junior teams and becoming a part of the U-19s in 2016. He was rated very highly by Thomas Tuchel and the BVB bosses and was destined for big things.

However, disaster struck on 14 September, 2016 when he suffered a horrific leg break in a UEFA Youth League match against Legia Warsaw. It was described as ‘one of the worst injuries you could imagine’ by doctors. He was operated on nine times in the months that followed, and it was thought that he would never play again.

But Scuderi refused to give up and defied doctors by making a remarkable return to training in May 2018. He continued his road to recovery by making the substitutes’ bench in a reserves friendly match against Lüner SV in just three months later. His dream of making a return came closer when he was named on the bench for the U-23s in their competitive game against Wuppertal SV last month.

While he remained on the bench, Scuderi was overjoyed on making his return to the team.

"Scuderi told the club’s official website, “Obviously it was something very special for me after such a long time out. For a long time it wasn’t clear what would happen or where things would go. It’s unbelievable to have made it back into the squad. I’m simply delighted, I’ve trained a lot and happy to be back in the squad today.”"

Unfortunately, Scuderi has now decided that the risks of an injury relapse are far too great, and so he has decided to call time on his playing career. Despite the disappointing news, the 21 year old is already looking forward to the future and he will now start training at the BVB football school.

"“It was not an easy decision, playing football was always my big dream and I gave everything for it. I fought and also had offers to keep playing, Scuderi told Ruhr Nachrichten. Borussia Dortmund is my family and I’m looking forward to doing something new.”"

Scuderi will always remain part of the Borussia Dortmund family and there will always be a place for him at the club. We hope that the Italian finds success in whatever career path he chooses in the future. Echte Liebe.
