Der BVB crushed their opponents every preseason match en route to the Super Cup. While the game against Liverpool was the toughest test they faced, Borussia Dortmund still came out on top over last season’s UEFA Champions League winners. Borussia Dortmund made a few highly rated signings over the summer and the team as a whole looks much stronger than last season.
Bayern Munich
LWWWL
Bayern Munich is a team that has seen better days. The transfer window is open until September 2nd and last year’s Bundesliga champions may need it. They lost to Arsenal and Tottenham over the summer break. These are losses that can be assessed by looking at squad depth. Transfermarkt is reporting only 21 players in the active squad leading up to the match. It’s a ballsy tactic heading into the season. But the signing of Leroy Sane is reportedly close, and could make Bayern the favourites for the title once again.
Team News
For Borussia Dortmund, Julian Brandt is unavailable with adductor problems, Mateu Morey is out with a dislocated shoulder, and Mats Hummels is reportedly out with an unspecified injury. While Roman Burki and Thorgan Hazard are also expected to miss the match. Bayern are set to be without Lucas Hernandez (training deficit) and Serge Gnabry, but Kingsley Coman should be ready to feature.
Opposition Star Man: Robert Lewandowski
The former Borussia Dortmund striker is the man to keep an eye on during this match. The Polish international has made it a habit of scoring against his former club, and nearly has every time. He scored 40 goals and made 13 assists in all competitions last season. The Pole has seven goals in his last three games against the Black and Yellows, and will be looking to add streak to that on Saturday,
Previous Match: Bayern 5 – 0 Borussia Dortmund
A vital win that never came for Borussia Dortmund is one way to sum up the last match between the two sides. Der BVB headed into the fixture top of the league and needed to win to keep the title hopes alive. Those hopes were dashed in the first half as Mats Hummels, Robert Lewandowski, Javi Martinez and Serge Gnabry all scored. There was no comeback to be had, Lewandowski placed the final nail in the coffin as Bayern cruised to a 5-0 win.
