Borussia Dortmund win DFL-Supercup with 2-0 win over Bayern Munich

Second half goals from Paco Alcacer and Jadon Sancho helped Borussia Dortmund beat rivals Bayern Munich 2-0 and win the 2019 DFL Supercup.
With four of the five new signings dealing with injuries, Lucien Favre went with the same front four he used for the majority of last season, while Julian Weigl slotted alongside Axel Witsel in the heart of midfield. Omer Toprak started with Manuel Akanji in defense, with backup goalkeeper Marwin Hitz lining up between the sticks.
Borussia Dortmund got out of the gates very quickly and Manuel Neuer had to make a brilliant save to deny Marco Reus in the first minute. Bayern’s defense looked vulnerable every time Borussia Dortmund ventured forward, and both Raphael Guerreiro and Paco Alcacer came close to scoring in the first half.
As the half went on, the Bavarians started to take control and created plenty of good chances, but failed to make the most of them. Despite the action packed first half, there were no goals heading into the break.
Borussia Dortmund started the second half on the front foot and were rewarded in the 48th minute when when Jadon Sancho dribbled his way past three Bayern players, before finding Paco Alcacer, who found the back of the net with a lovely low finish from the edge of the area.
After the goal, Bayern started to push higher up the pitch and came close, but were unable get past the impenetrable Marwin Hitz. The Swiss goalkeeper looked to be in inspired form and made several quality saves to keep the Bayern attack at bay.
And Borussia Dortmund doubled their lead in the 69th minute, when Raphael Guerreiro found Jadon Sancho with a gorgeous lobbed pass in the Dortmund half, and the Englishman raced away before finishing through the legs of the hapless Manuel Neuer, effectively sealing the win for his side. Bayern lost their steam after the second goal and the Black and Yellows cruised to victory in the end.
Borussia Dortmund may have had only 34% possession but it’s hard to argue with the fact that they deserved to win. This was FavreBall at its best, with scintillating counter attacking play to ensure that the first piece of silverware this season went to Dortmund.
While its hard to take to many takeaways from these season openers, Lucien Favre will be delighted that his side were in control for the majority of the 90 minutes and took their chances when it mattered the most. The trophy may not hold much significance, but the manner of the win will certainly give the team a lot of confidence heading into the new season.
