Borussia Dortmund got their season off to a perfect start, beating rivals Bayern Munich 2-0 to win the DFL Supercup 2019.

Borussia Dortmund’s competitive start to the 2019-20 season took place on Saturday as they faced Bayern Munich in this year’s edition of the DFL Supercup, Germany’s season curtain raiser. What many see as a glorified friendly was taken very seriously by both sides as they looked to throw down the gauntlet for the coming Bundesliga title race. Both Dortmund and Bayern had a point to prove coming into the game, especially when you consider how tight last season’s title race was.

The first half saw Bayern do their best to press and batter Dortmund into submission, but Die Schwarzgelben showed some staunch resilience in both the way they counter attacked and defended. The first half ended goalless, but both teams had a number of chances to take the lead, with Bayern perhaps the more dominant side.

The second half was an entirely different story for the Black and Yellows. Lucien Favre’s men came out with guns blazing, a rejuvenated sense of purpose clear in every pass and attack they constructed. Dortmund enjoyed much more possession in the second half, and continued to defend extremely well, denying some very good Bayern chances in the process.

They would go on to score early in the second half, before doubling their lead in the 69th minute, which rounded off what was a surprisingly comfortable win against a Bayern side that has struck such an imposing figure in the past. There seemed to be no sign of the usual mental roadblocks that have troubled Dortmund in other fixtures against the Bavarian giants.

With the first piece of silverware under their belts, lets take a look at some of the key talking points from the game, and how this might reflect the potential possibilities for Borussia Dortmund in the season to come.
