Raphaël Guerreiro shows just how good he is

The summer transfer window has been rife with rumors that Raphaël Guerreiro is set to leave Borussia Dortmund for pastures new, with links to the likes of PSG and Barcelona going hot and cold at a moments notice. His Supercup performance may however have an impact on how Dortmund’s hierarchy view the situation regarding his potential departure. Rapha put in a very impressive display against Bayern.

The Portuguese international was all over the pitch, making key interceptions, starting deadly counter attacks and creating opportunities from the left flank, a position he enjoyed ample success in last season. In the first minute of the game Rapha made a fantastic run to the far edge of the box and cut back a very nice pass to Marco Reus who almost put Dortmund ahead, which would have proved to be an unexpected and exciting start to the game.

Guerreiro continued to work up and down the left, sometimes even coming into the center to try and find Reus, Sancho or Alcacer in the process. His greatest highlight came in the 68th minute when he intercepted the ball at the center of the park, and followed this up with an impressive outside of the foot pass to find Sancho, who used his pace and cunning to slot past Manuel Neuer for Dortmund’s second goal of the game.

Rapha’s performance in this game makes me think that perhaps the Dortmund hierarchy will want to re-evaluate their stance on Rapha’s contract situation and perhaps push harder for an extension. His value to the team was highlighted now more than ever as four of Dortmund’s five summer signings missed this game through injury. It will either be a turning point in these negotiations, or perhaps the audition that sends Rapha to his next club. With the transfer market clock ticking, we’re bound to find out soon what the final verdict regarding Guerreiro will be.
