The Sancho Show – A tale of Two Halves

Jadon Sancho, as ever, was one of the focal points for Borussia Dortmund’s attack in their triumph over Bayern. Sancho was responsible for teeing up Paco Alcacer, who put Dortmund ahead with a superb finish. It was a moment of brilliance from Sancho which saw him leave Jerome Boateng and several of his teammates in the dust, to the satisfaction of the Dortmund faithful. Sancho followed this assist up with the winning goal later in the second half. Finding himself on the end of Raphael Guerreiro’s pass, Sancho sprang to life and made sure he slotted past Neuer in emphatic fashion, his shot finding its way into the back of the net between the Bayern keeper’s legs.

While Sancho was a major factor in Dortmund’s win over their rivals, it has to be noted that while he showed many of his positive qualities in this game, he also showed a bit of his inexperience at times, especially in the first half. There were a few instances early on in the game that saw Sancho try to be a bit too clever. He lost the ball in dangerous areas and was sometimes a bit late in terms of picking the proper avenues for passes to his teammates. That being said, Sancho did clearly grow into the game and start making crucial decisions that contributed to BVB’s success, starting with his assist for Alcacer’s opener. It was almost as if someone had flipped a switch, and Sancho yet again became one of the driving forces that led Dortmund to victory.

The young English international also picked up what is hopefully not a serious injury at the hands of Bayern’s Joshua Kimmich, who stomped on the players foot as Sancho tried to retrieve the ball, which had gone out of bounds. Kimmich escaped with a yellow card, which one might call very fortunate considering the circumstances.  The more one watches replays of the stomp, the more cynical Kimmich’s actions seem. Of course, both Kimmich and Bayern won’t want to admit any foul play took place, however we can hope that the German FA take a good hard look at the footage and address the situation accordingly.
