Reus and Alcacer score as Borussia Dortmund beat KFC Uerdingen in the DFB Pokal

Borussia Dortmund provided no shocks in the first round of the DFB Pokal, beating KFC Uerdingen 2-0 thanks to second half goals from Marco Reus and Paco Alcacer.
Lucien Favre made just two changes to the side that beat Bayern Munich in the Supercup last weekend, bringing in Mats Hummels and Thorgan Hazard for Ömer Toprak and the injured Raphael Guerreiro. Uerdingen, who play in the third division, fielded a line-up with a number of ex Bundesliga players, including Kevin Großkreutz, Franck Evina and Jean-Manuel Mbom.
As expected, Borussia Dortmund started on the front foot and had plenty of possession with Uerdingen keen to sit back with ten men behind the ball. Thorgan Hazard looked the liveliest of Dortmund’s attacking players and created several good opportunities in the first half. Lukasz Piszczek, Paco Alcacer, Mats Hummels and Jadon Sancho all came close to scoring, but somehow Uerdingen kept them at bay.
The home side had a couple of chances of their own and Marwin Hitz had to be alert to keep out Roberto Rodriguez’ effort in the 7th minute. Late in the first half, Mats Hummels was caught napping, as Osayamen Osawe stole the ball off him but fluffed his lines with just the goalkeeper to beat.
Despite Borussia Dortmund’s dominance, they were unable find a breakthrough as Uerdingen’s defense held on to keep the game goalless at half time.
The Black and Yellows started the second half just like they ended the first, and took the lead in the 49th minute, with Marco Reus finding the net. Manuel Akanji’s over-the-top through ball deflected off a couple of Uerdingen defenders before striking Reus’ arm, and the Borussia Dortmund captain scored from close range. Had there been VAR, the goal may have been chalked off. But Borussia Dortmund certainly deserved their little slice of luck.
Paco Alcacer then sealed the win in the 70th minute with a sumptuous free-kick from 25 yards out after Nico Schulz was fouled. It was another beautiful strike by the Spaniard, who now has two goals in as many games this season.
Content with the scoreline, Borussia Dortmund dropped their tempo after the second goal and saw the game through without any difficulties. Uerdingen put up a good fight, but ultimately Borussia Dortmund’s quality helped them come out on top.
The win takes Borussia Dortmund through to the second round which will take place at the end of October. Lucien Favre’s men will now turn their attentions to the start of their Bundesliga campaign against Augsburg next weekend.
