Bundesliga Preview: The lowdown on Borussia Dortmund, Bayern Munich, RB Leipzig, Bayer Leverkusen and Borussia Mönchengladbach
By Tushar Bahl
The 2019/20 Bundesliga season is almost upon us and it promises to be one of the most exciting campaigns in recent history. Here we take a look at how last season’s top five are shaping up as we inch closer to Matchday 1.
Bayern Munich
Niko Kovac’s first season in charge saw Bayern Munich lift the Bundesliga title on the final day of the season, after they finished two points ahead of Borussia Dortmund. The Bavarians have lifted the Meisterschale for each of the last seven seasons, but have endured a chaotic summer so far, struggling to bring in reinforcements.
While Bayern have replaced Mats Hummels by signing French defenders Lucas Hernandez and Benjamin Pavard, they have not yet filled the void left by the departures of Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery. Ivan Perisic has arrived on loan from Inter Milan, but they are set to miss out on Leroy Sane, after the Manchester City winger suffered a long term injury earlier this month.
Despite their lack of depth, Bayern still have enough quality in their squad and go into the season as one of the favourites to taste the champagne come May.
Key Players
Robert Lewandowski scored 22 goals last season and is showing no signs of slowing down just yet. The Pole will be determined to continue his hot streak and fire Bayern to the title once again. Supporting Lewandowski will be the talented wing duo of Serge Gnabry and Kingsley Coman. Despite their struggles with injuries in recent months, both Gnabry and Coman are game-changers and match-winners, meaning even though Bayern missed out on signing Leroy Sane, they still have plenty of firepower in their attack.
Joshua Kimmich was one of the best players in the Bundesliga last season and got 13 assists from right back. His quality, both defensively and offensively, will be key to Bayern’s chances this season.
