Bundesliga roundup: Bayern, Leipzig run rampant, Borussia Dortmund stumble against Union Berlin

Matchday 3 of the Bundesliga season saw Borussia Dortmund suffer their first defeat of the season, while Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig enjoyed dominant wins.

Timo Werner scored a hat-trick as RB Leipzig began the Matchday with a 3-1 win over Borussia Mönchengladbach on Friday. Breel Embolo scored a late goal for Gladbach, but it wasn’t enough to put a dent on Julian Nagelsmann’s perfect record at Leipzig.

Bayern Munich came from behind to thrash Mainz 6-1 at the Allianz Arena. Jean-Paul Boetius gave the 05ers the lead in just the sixth minute, but goals from Benjamin Pavard, David Alaba, Ivan Perisic, Kingsley Coman, Robert Lewandowski and Alphonso Davies helped Bayern turn things around and register a comfortable win in the end.

Borussia Dortmund suffered a shock 3-1 defeat to newly promoted side Union Berlin. Marius Bülter opened the scoring for the home side, but Paco Alcacer scored the equaliser soon after. Bülter then made it 2-1, before Sebastian Andersson added a third to give Union Berlin a famous victory.

Schalke 04 got their first win of the season, beating Hertha Berlin 3-0. Own goals from Niklas Stark and Karim Rekik put the Royal Blues two goals ahead, before Jonjoe Kenny found the net to seal the win in the 85th minute.

It was a fantastic weekend for the newly promoted sides, as FC Köln also earned their first win of the season, beating Freiburg 2-1. Rafael Czichos’ own goal helped Freiburg take the lead, before goals from Anthony Modeste and Ellyes Skhiri helped the Billy Goats pull off an impressive second half comeback.

Paderborn also got their first point of the season, as they held Wolfsburg to a 1-1 draw. Paderborn took the lead through Cauly Oliveira-Souza, before Josip Brekalo levelled the scores in the second half. Bayer Leverkusen dropped points for the first time this season, as they were held to a goalless draw by Hoffenheim.

On Sunday, Werder Bremen beat 10-man Augsburg 3-2 in a topsy turvy encounter. Bremen took the lead through Yuya Osako in the sixth minute, before Ruben Vargas made it 1-1. Josh Sargent then restored Bremen’s advantage, but Vargas equalised for Augsburg once again. Osako found the net again in the 67th minute, and that goal proved to be the winner for Florian Kohfeldt’s side.

In the final game of the matchday, Eintracht Frankfurt came from behind to beat Fortuna Düsseldorf 2-1. Rouwen Hennings gave Fortuna the lead in the first half, but second half goals from new signing Bas Dost and Goncalo Paciencia helped the Eagles turn things around and earn the all important three points.
