Bundesliga Roundup: Bayern Munich go top as Borussia Dortmund, Leipzig slip up
By Tushar Bahl
Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig both dropped points on Matchday 06, allowing Bayern Munich to take a one point lead at the top of the table.
Bayern Munich got the three points, but it was anything but straightforward as they were pushed all the way by bottom club Paderborn. The champions took the lead through Serge Gnabry, before Philippe Coutinho made it 2-0 in the second half. Paderborn pulled a goal back through Kai Pröger, before Robert Lewandowski restored Bayern’s two goal cushion. Jamilu Collins made it 3-2 with a stunning strike from long range, but Paderborn weren’t able to find a late equaliser.
Borussia Dortmund once again failed to hold on to a lead as they were held to a 2-2 draw by Werder Bremen. Milot Rashica opened the scoring in this topsy turvy affair, but Mario Götze equalised less than two minutes later. Marco Reus then gave Borussia Dortmund the lead on the stroke of half time, before poor defending from Borussia Dortmund allowed Marco Friedl to head home Werder Bremen’s equaliser in the second half.
RB Leipzig suffered their first defeat of the season, as they lost 3-1 to Schalke 04. Goals from Salif Sane, Amine Harit and Rabbi Matondo helped Schalke cruise to a three goal lead, before Emil Forsberg netted a late consolation for Julian Nagelsmann’s side.
Borussia Mönchengladbach made it three wins in a row with a comfortable 3-0 win over TSG Hoffenheim. Alassane Plea, Marcus Thuram and Florian Neuhaus all scored to give Marco Rose’s side a comfortable win to help them move up to fifth place in the league table.
Bayer Leverkusen cruised to a 3-0 win against a hapless Augsburg side. Florian Niederlechner’s own goal helped Peter Bosz’ side take the lead, before late goals from Kevin Volland and Kai Havertz added gloss to the scoreline.
Eintracht Frankfurt returned to winning ways with a 2-1 win away to Union Berlin. Bas Dost and Andre Silva both scored in the second half for the Eagles, before Anthony Ujah pulled a goal back for the capital club.
Wolfsburg continued their unbeaten start to the season with a 1-0 win over Mainz. Marcel Tisserand gave the Wolves the lead in the ninth minute, and that goal proved to be the winner as Mainz failed to launch a comeback.
Sunday saw SC Freiburg come from behind to beat Fortuna Dusseldorf 2-1. Rouwen Hennings gave Fortuna the lead in the 42nd minute, but Jonathan Schmid equalised just three minutes later. Dusseldorf dominated the game, but it was Freiburg who got the three points with Luca Waldschmidt scoring the winner in the 81st minute.
Hertha Berlin rounded off the matchday by thumping FC Köln 4-0, thanks to goals from Javairo Dilrosun, Vedad Ibisevic (x2) and Dedryck Boyata. The Billy Goats had Jorge Mere sent off just before half time, allowing Hertha to cruise to victory in the second half.
