Borussia Dortmund are coming off a narrow victory over Borussia Monchengladbach at home but haven’t made the best of starts in the Bundesliga. However, they have made a good start to their Champions League campaign, and are in first place in Group F with a draw and a win in their opening two games.
The Black and Yellows will need top performances from the whole squad if they are to beat Inter Milan, who are enjoying a superb start to the season.
Inter Milan
WWLLW
Under Antonio Conte, Inter Milan are one point under Juventus in Serie A and it is obvious what impact the former Chelsea manager has had on the club. The preferred line up of 3-5-2 has provided great results. Their defence looks stronger than ever, while the partnership between Romelu Lukaku and Lautaro Martinez is blossoming up front. However, the Nerazzurri have just one point from their opening two Champions League matches, and this is a must win game for them.
Inter Milan have won two out of the four matches between the two clubs, but there is little in the way of telling how this match may go until the whistle is blown.
Team News
Jadon Sancho is back from suspension and will look to make an impact in the starting lineup. Marco Reus and Paco Alcacer are out of the squad, dealing with illness and injury respectively. BVB is without a natural striker heading into this match, so Mario Gotze is likely to take up that role.
Inter Milan will be without Stefano Sensi in midfield, Alexis Sanchez on the wing and Danilo D’Ambrosio in right back, as all are out with injury.
Opposition Star Man: Samir Handanovic
Samir Handanovic is Inter Milan’s number 1 for a reason. He makes roughly 3 saves a match and has kept 4 clean sheets. Handanovic is a commanding presence in Inter’s goal and is not likely to make mistakes, any shots on target will have to be expertly placed to get past him. He has been one of the most consistent goalkeepers in Europe for years now, and scoring against him certainly won’t be an easy task.
With Handanovic in goal and the likes of Skriniar, Godin and de Vrij in defense, Inter have one of the best defences in Europe.
Previous Match: Inter Milan 1 – 2 Borussia Dortmund (UEFA Cup Quarter-Finals)
These two sides last met on March 17th, 1994 and the likes of Lars Ricken, Matthias Sammer and Michael Zorc were in the lineup, while Inter Milan had the likes of Dennis Bergkamp in their starting lineup.
After losing the first leg 3-1, Borussia Dortmund took the lead early on when Michael Zorc brought up the ball from half field and found Stephane Chapuisat on the edge of the box. Chapuisat then flicked the ball in the area as Zorc ran into the box, displaced the defenders and smashed the ball past Walter Zenga.
Just after half time, poor defending by Angelo Orlando saw the ball drop kindly just outside of the box and Matthias Sammer scrambled for it before finding Lars Ricken, who hit the ball into the bottom right corner of the goal from roughly 25 yards to make it 2-0 on the night.
With Borussia Dortmund sensing a stunning comeback, Inter Milan struck late on to seal their win. Dennis Bergkamp saw a huge gap in the defense and found Antonio Manicone running toward the box with little standing in his way. Manicone easily scored on Stefan Klos, securing a victory on aggregate of 4-3, knocking BVB out of the competition.
