Late Marco Reus equaliser saves toothless Borussia Dortmund against Paderborn
By Tushar Bahl
An incredible second half comeback saw Borussia Dortmund come from three goals down to earn a 3-3 draw at home to bottom club Paderborn.
Lucien Favre named a much changed line up to the team that was hammered by Bayern Munich two weeks ago. Lukasz Piszczek, Mahmoud Dahoud, Raphael Guerreiro, Marco Reus and Paco Alcacer all came into the side, with Manuel Akanji, Achraf Hakimi, Julian Brandt, Thorgan Hazard and Mario Gotze dropping out.
But Borussia Dortmund got off to the worst possible start as Paderborn took the lead inside five minutes thanks to a devastating counter attack. Streli Mamba opened the scoring for the away side after some excellent work by Kai Pröger left Nico Schulz for dead.
What followed was nothing short of a nightmare. Mamba doubled his tally after being played in by an over the top through ball by Ben Zolinski. Two became three soon as Gerrit Holtmann ran free down the left wing, before finishing coolly past the hapless Roman Bürki. It went from bad to worse for Borussia Dortmund when Paco Alcacer went off with a serious looking knee injury, with Julian Brandt coming on to replace him right on the stroke of half time.
Loud boos rang when the half-time whistle was blown, as the Black and Yellows were made to look very ordinary by Bundesliga’s bottom club.
Lucien Favre made two further changes at half time, with Thorgan Hazard and Achraf Hakimi coming on. The latter made an instant impact as he set up Jadon Sancho, who pulled one back for the hosts in the 47th minute. Marco Reus, Mats Hummels, Axel Witsel and Thorgan Hazard all came close as Borussia Dortmund started to apply relentless pressure on the Paderborn goal.
The pressure finally paid off in the 84th minute when Witsel made it 3-2 with a fine header from Mats Hummels’ excellent cross. And just when it looked like the newly promoted side would get all three points, Marco Reus headed home Borussia Dortmund’s equaliser after being set up by Jadon Sancho.
The goal may just have saved under fire coach Lucien Favre’s job. But it wasn’t enough to please the home crowd as the Borussia Dortmund players were booed off at the final whistle.
The result helped Der BVB move up to fifth place in the league table, although they could end the weekend as low as ninth. Next up for Borussia Dortmund is a trip to the Camp Nou to take on Barcelona, before another tricky away game to Hertha Berlin in the Bundesliga.
