Borussia Dortmund were at their dominant best as they hit five past Fortuna Düsseldorf to move back into the top four.

Following last weekend’s win over Hertha Berlin, Lucien Favre decided to stick with a back three, with Lukasz Piszczek coming in for the suspended Mats Hummels. And sporting an all black kit to commemorate the club’s 110 year history, Borussia Dortmund put in an inspired display, enjoying more than 70% of the ball.

The Black and Yellows looked quicker, sharper and played with a much higher tempo than they have in recent weeks. They controlled the game right from the first whistle, but it took them up until the 42nd minute to take the lead. And it was the under-pressure Marco Reus who made it 1-0. Julian Brandt found Lukasz Piszczek on the edge of the box, before the latter flicked the ball through to Reus, who finished with great composure.

Borussia Dortmund began the first half just as they had finished the first. Dan Axel Zagadou let fly from long range, but Zack Steffen made a fine save to tip his shot over the bar. Jadon Sancho then thought he had made it 2-0, but the goal was ruled out after Marco Reus was adjudged to be offside in the build-up.

Dortmund finally got their second in the 58th minute when some excellent work by Julian Brandt allowed Sancho to play Thorgan Hazard in on goal. And the Belgian international coolly slotted the ball past Steffen to get his third goal of the season.

Sancho got on the scoresheet just five minutes later after getting on the end of Marco Reus’ cut-back. Hazard then found Reus for Dortmund’s fourth, before Sancho sealed the rout after getting on the end of Achraf Hakimi’s pass.

It was a much needed statement win for Borussia Dortmund, who are now up to third place in the league table. Such was the level of Dortmund’s dominance, that Lucien Favre even decided to bring on Leonardo Balerdi for his long-awaited debut.
