Mario Götze has decided not to extend his contract with Borussia Dortmund, and will leave on a free transfer in the summer, according to reports in Germany.

With his contract set to expire at the end of the season, Mario Götze’s future has been subject to a lot of speculation. The Borussia Dortmund hierarchy have been clear about their desire to keep the former German international at the club. But they were only willing to offer him a new deal worth seven million euros per year, a 30% decrease on his current salary.

According to BILD, the two parties could not agree to terms for a new contract, and Götze will now leave Borussia Dortmund for free in the summer. Hertha Berlin are interested in signing the 27 year old on a free transfer, but BILD say that he is more likely to join a club abroad.

After leaving Borussia Dortmund to join Bayern Munich in 2013, Götze returned to the Westfalenstadion three years later. While his second spell hasn’t gone half as well as his first, he has still produced some important goals and assists for Black and Yellows over the last three and a half years.

He has largely been used as a number nine by Lucien Favre, but has been limited to a bit part role this season. And following the arrival of Erling Haaland, his playing time is set to reduce even further in the second half of the season.

With Götze set to leave for free, and Alcacer also expected to depart, Borussia Dortmund might be forced into signing another striker in the summer.
