Borussia Dortmund right-back Achraf Hakimi, has won his second consecutive African Youth player of the Year Award.

Achraf Hakimi has had a massive impact since joining Borussia Dortmund on his two year loan from Real Madrid. He has gotten a lot of play time that he would not have otherwise received had he stayed at Real Madrid, which has been a key contributor in Hakimi winning back to back African youth player of the season awards.

Hakimi beat out Villareal’s Samu Chukwueze and Lille’s Victor Osimhen for the award. Hakimi is definitely the most established out of the three of them playing a featured role on a top team.

Hakimi was also named to the African best XI of 2019 which is impressive given his age. He was included in the best XI along with the likes of Riyad Mahrez, Sadio Mane and Mo Salah, which reinforces his importance to this Dortmund side.

It remains to be seen if Hakimi will remain with Dortmund past this season with his two year loan expiring in the summer of 2020. There have been some reports of Dortmund potentially making some headway into either another loan or a potential permanent move for Hakimi but nothing seems to be imminent just yet. Hakimi himself touched on the subject, being quoted saying the following.

"“I do not know what will happen in the future, but I am doing my best to finish this season in the best way with Dortmund.”"

You can’t really expect the player to say much more in these situations so there isn’t much to be read into at this point. Hakimi is tailor made for Dortmund’s new system and if they are planning with this system past this season it is well worth bringing Hakimi back, whether it be on loan or permanently.
