Stop playing players out of position

Over the past 18 months, Lucien Favre has played a lot of players out of position. And on most occasions, things haven’t worked out as the Swiss tactician would have wanted. The likes of Julian Weigl, Julian Brandt, Lukasz Piszczek, Thorgan Hazard and Mario Götze are just some of the players who have been used in positions they aren’t as effective in.

Brandt was struggling and failing to make an impact as a number nine, but now looks so much more comfortable and threatening in his natural number eight role. While Weigl and Piszczek both looked prone to errors in their short stints at centre-back.

Playing players out of position would be more understandable if he didn’t have better options available to him. But with Zagadou and Balerdi sitting on the bench, it made no sense to play Weigl or Piszczek in the heart of defence.

Similarly, playing with a mobile front three did work in certain games. But Borussia Dortmund’s lack of attacking edge was also found out in other games without a natural striker.

Favre needs to make sure that unless he is forced into it, he doesn’t repeat this mistake in the second half of the season.
