Augsburg 3-5 Borussia Dortmund: Key talking points from the game
Defensive worries continue to haunt Dortmund
It comes as no surprise to most fans that Borussia Dortmund’s frailty in defence has continued into the new decade. The team has had a longstanding problem at the back, and the winter break was never going to be enough time for them to iron out all the issues they were dealing with.
Couple this with injury worries surrounding Dan-Axel Zagadou which forced Lucien Favre to leave the impressive youngster in Dortmund for the clash, and many before the match indicated that his absence would make Dortmund’s trip to Augsburg a difficult one.
Just as envisioned, Dortmund were leaky at the back, making silly mistakes that needn’t have occured in the first place. Taking Augsburg’s first goal as an example, the chance itself came about from an erring back pass from Thorgan Hazard. The pass itself left the Dortmund defense exposed, and Lukasz Piszczek was unable to close down the opposition’s incoming attackers.
Casual marking continued to be an issue throughout the game with both the following goals conceded. All in all, Richter and Niedelechner were afforded too much space to create and take their chances. Dortmund will have to continue to iron out these issues as the campaign goes on, should they wish to finish atop the league come May.
