Mats Hummels (January 2008)

Mats Hummels arrived at Borussia Dortmund on an initial 18-month loan deal from Bayern Munich in 2008. He showed glimpses of his talent in his first six months at the club, before becoming a regular under new head coach Jürgen Klopp in the following season.

His impressive progress prompted Der BVB to sign him on a permanent transfer for four million euros in February 2009.

Hummels went on to form a formidable partnership with Neven Subotic in the heart of Borussia Dortmund’s defence for years to come. The two played a big role in the Black and Yellows’ back to back Bundesliga title wins. World Cup success with Germany followed in 2014, and Hummels was named Borussia Dortmund captain soon after.

Although he left to join Bayern Munich in 2016, Hummels made a spectacular return to the Westfalenstadion last summer. He is without a doubt one of the best centre-backs to ever play for the club, and he remains a vital part of the team even now.
