Erling Haaland nets brace as Borussia Dortmund cruise past FC Koln 5-1

Raphael Guerreiro, Marco Reus, Jadon Sancho and Erling Haaland were amongst the scorers as Borussia Dortmund thumped FC Köln 5-1.
Fresh off a 5-3 win against Augsburg, Lucien Favre made no changes to his starting XI, keeping last week’s hat-trick hero Erling Haaland on the bench. But Borussia Dortmund made the perfect the perfect start to the game, opening the scoring after just 52 seconds.
Mats Hummels played the perfect long ball to Marco Reus, who passed it on to Jadon Sancho. The Englishman then dribbled into the box and picked out Raphael Guerreiro with a low cross, and the wing-back made no mistake from 12 yards out to give his side the lead.
Borussia Dortmund continued to dominate after the goal, and were awarded a penalty after Achraf Hakimi was brought down by Sebastiaan Bornauw. VAR adjudged that the foul had taken place outside the box, and the penalty was chalked off in favour of a free-kick. Timo Horn saved Marco Reus’ free-kick, and his crossbar denied Mats Hummels from the resultant corner.
The two then combined for the second goal, as Hummels played another perfect long-ball to play Marco Reus in on goal, and the Dortmund captain scored past Horn to bring up his tenth goal of the season.
The Black and Yellows went into the break on the back of a strong display, and with a two goal cushion to show for it.
That lead was nearly halved right at the start of the second half, when Mats Hummels missed his header, allowing Jhon Córdoba to go through on goal. Luckily, the linesman raised his flag and Dortmund survived the scare.
Two minutes later, Reus picked out Sancho in the box, and the 19 year old showed some quick feet before firing his shot past Horn to make it 3-0. Just before Erling Haaland was about to come on, Schalke loanee Mark Uth pulled a goal back for Köln after finding himself in yards of space.
But any hopes of a Köln comeback were dashed when Haaland found himself in the right place to score his first goal at the Westfalenstadion, after Guerreiro’s shot was parried by Horn.
Haaland then showed great determination to get on the end of Mahmoud Dahoud’s through ball ahead of Horn, before finding the net from an improbable angle to double his tally.
5-1 it ended in favour of Borussia Dortmund. A spectacular win that showed that Lucien Favre’s men are ready to put on a serious challenge for the Bundesliga title this season. Next up for them is another home game against Union Berlin, and fans will be hoping to see Haaland right from the start.
