Erling Haaland scored twice and won a penalty as Borussia Dortmund continued their excellent run of form with a 5-0 win over Union Berlin.

After coming off the bench and scoring five goals in his first two games, Haaland was named in the Borussia Dortmund starting line-up for the first time by head coach Lucien Favre. It took Dortmund just 13 minutes to get on the scoresheet, when Jadon Sancho’s deflected effort found its way into the net.

It was Sancho’s 25th goal in the Bundesliga, making him the youngest player to reach the landmark.

Haaland got in on the act just five minutes later when he turned in Julian Brandt’s low cross into an empty net to make it 2-0 for Borussia Dortmund.

The Black and Yellows had their chances to put the game to bed before half time, but their attempts at making too many intricate passes prevented them from adding to their lead.

Borussia Dortmund’s frustrations continued after half-time, as Jadon Sancho and Lukasz Piszczek missed two good chances to add to the lead. But just as Union Berlin were starting to grow into the game, Erling Haaland was fouled inside the box by goalkeeper Rafał Gikiewicz, giving Lucien Favre’s side a penalty.

Marco Reus made no mistake from the resulting spot-kick to finally extend Borussia Dortmund’s lead. Three became four just two minutes later, when Jadon Sancho picked out Axel Witsel in the box, and the Belgian smashed the ball into the net.

Erling Haaland then added the icing on the cake with an excellent first time finish past Gikiewicz, after Julian Brandt’s back-heel.

It was another dominant performance by Borussia Dortmund, who have now scored five goals in each of their opening three games of the calendar year. Tougher tests lie ahead undoubtedly, but Lucien Favre will definitely be delighted with his side’s attacking prowess as well as the well earned clean sheet.
