Key Takeaways from Borussia Dortmund’s Pokal defeat to Werder Bremen
Borussia Dortmund were knocked out of the DFB Pokal in the round of 16 on Tuesday in an unnecessary loss to Werder Bremen.
Borussia Dortmund were knocked out of the DFB Pokal… In the Round of 16… By Werder Bremen… again. Exact same story as last season, even more coincidental is that Marco Reus has been ruled out for a month after the game against Werder Bremen. Which is exactly what happened last year. This was the point in last season that Dortmund started to spiral out of control and saw the Bundesliga title slip from their grasp.
Borussia Dortmund really should have won this game, instead they played down to the level of their opponent and got beat for it. It started off with a brutal giveaway by Hakimi at the top of the 18 yard box, then came a poor save by Hitz who spilled the ball directly in front of him instead of pushing it wide. And on top of that Akanji was sleeping and allowed his man to run in and scoop up the rebound. Dortmund were chasing the game from there on out. Even with their poor play Dortmund could have easily come out on top, wasting several chances that would eventually cost them.
Here are the takeaways from Borussia Dortmund’s loss to Werder Bremen.
