Borussia Dortmund: Three keys to victory against Werder Bremen
By Adam Bakr
Putting away their chances
Borussia Dortmund had their opportunities in the cup loss. Giovanni Reyna had a one on one with Jiri Pavlenka that he could not put away, and minutes later Bremen made it 3-1. It was soon after Erling Haaland scored to cut the Bremen lead in half and was a great chance for Dortmund to flip the momentum completely in that game.
Jadon Sancho went through on goal with the score at 3-2, but was let down by a poor first touch. Marco Reus also had a great chance in the dying stages, but shot straight at Pavlenka from Reyna’s cutback. Either one of those chances going in could have drastically changed the game and potentially kept their cup run alive.
Haaland came off the bench in that game, so having the 19-year-old striker on the field for the whole game usually means good things. He is coming off his game winning double against PSG and his confidence is on full display after the way he took his second goal.
Jadon Sancho will be looked at as the primary figure to supply Haaland and help with the scoring load, as Reus and Brandt are still recovering from injury and Thorgan Hazard playing himself back into form.
Wasting chances was just as important in Dortmund losing the games to Bremen and Leverkusen back to back, and another performance can further hurt a league campaign already on thin ice.
