Erling Haaland scored his 40th goal of the season as Borussia Dortmund beat Werder Bremen 2-0, making it three wins on the trot.

Looking to build on the mid-week win over Paris St. Germain in the Champions League, Lucien Favre named the same starting XI for the third game running. And Borussia Dortmund seemed to be feeling the effects of their hard work on Tuesday early on, as they struggled to match the pace and intensity of the relegation threatened Werder Bremen.

The hosts enjoyed a couple of decent openings in the early stages of the game. But they weren’t clinical enough to trouble Roman Bürki’s goal. The Black and Yellows started to grow into the game, but failed to create too many chances despite dominating possession. The scrappy first half ended without any goals, as the two sides fought hard to stay in control.

Borussia Dortmund started the second half on the front foot, and took the lead just seven minutes in. Dan Axel Zagadou showed great presence and desire to get on the end of Jadon Sancho’s corner, poking the ball into the net from six yards out.

The goal allowed the title chasers to take complete control of the game, and they started playing some of their best football of the 90 minutes. Dortmund’s second goal arrived soon after the hour mark, as Erling Haaland was picked out by Achraf Hakimi’s cut-back and the in-form striker coolly finished past Jiri Pavlenka.

The Norwegian international celebrated his ninth Bundesliga goal for Borussia Dortmund, and his 40th in all competitions for the season, in just 30 games.

Haaland came close to adding to his tally but was denied by Pavlenka twice late on. The Bremen goalkeeper also made a good save from Achraf Hakimi’s effort, but Borussia Dortmund still got the all important three points.

The win means that Borussia Dortmund stay four points behind rivals Bayern Munich with 11 games to go until the end of the season. Lucien Favre’s side now face a tricky run of matches, and will be aiming to keep their impressive run going ahead of the international break.
